Smashbox Cover Shot Eyeshadow Palettes ($35 CAD each) are thin, sleek eyeshadow compacts in Smashbox’s range. Where the launch did not initially catch my eye, I was looking at the Marc Jacobs Coconut Fantasy eyeshadow palette and wanted to buy it for the first 3 matte shades: am ivory, cool tone brown and medium coral shade. After I talked myself out of spending $64 CAD for three eyeshadows, I stumbled across this Smashbox palette in store. I did a side by side comparison swatch and realized that the Smashbox palette was close enough to the first 3 shades of the Marc Jacobs palette, the quality was just as good and I would use all of the colours in this palette making it a much better value.
The compact is incredibly thin and minimalistic, the mirror in the lid projects out a bit and is what clicks the top lid down into the palette when closed. While I like how sleek the palette is, I wish it had a magnetic closure (at times it’s hard to open and I often prick my finger on the corners of the mirror). I also wish the palette stayed open when placed down (instead of automatically shutting, which gets very annoying).
The Matte eyeshadow palette contains 8 matte eyeshadows ranging from warm to cool tones. I like how the two highlight shades at the top are a banana yellow and a pale pink to cover a wide variety of preferences. Some of my favorite shades are the neutral warm brown (second from the left), the gorgeous pinky mauve (fourth from the left), the incredibly deep black shadow and the banana shade at the top.
The quality of the shades are great. While I do get some fall out in the pan, the shades cling on well to the lids, show up true to colour, blend out well and build up to give you a very pigmented, opaque colour
Overall, I love this palette and would repurchase. It’s a perfect go to matte palette that I love and reach for often!
